Interview: Casual Silence – Zelfde mannen, nieuwe energie

In case you are wondering, the title is in Dutch. As is the interview, unfortunately. I have always did all my content in English. Ever since I started reviewing back in 2003! LiveProg has always been in English…well…not always! I actually posted two interview in Dutch! In 2011 I did interviews with Gerben Klazinga of Knight Area and Ton Scherpenzeel from Kayak. Both said an interview in English would not work, so I made exceptions, as I really wanted to interview them…

Ok, I am digressing. Back to the topic: Casual Silence. I know the guys from Casual Silence for over 20 years. I was present when they did the release show for their second album, Once in a Blue Moon. For a while I ran their website. And I went to see more shows than I can remember as well as visit them regularly in their rehearsal space.

But in…2011…it all ended. They had released their fourth studio album, Vertical Horizon, for me and many others, the best album they made. But shortly after the release, they announced their end…

Fast-forward about 11 years, to december 2022. That was the moment Casual Silence returned to the stage. originally meant as a one time things (I think), but more shows followed and in september 2024, we were treated to six (!) brand new songs!

As long as I know the guys (full disclosure, between 2011 and 2022, I had not had any contcat with them), I never interviewed them. Maybe because I started doing interview with LiveProg and that was around…2011…this year keeps coming back!

So this time I did do an interview with them. The same guys in the same rehearsal space, as I used to visit back in the day and the same sense of humour! But new energy. And I was happy they agreed to do an interview. I was bit sad it couldn’t be done in English. I tried to add subtitles, even used the AI speech to text as well as translate functions, but they were no match for the Helmond’s* accent of the band.

Since adding subtitles manually would take me a long time and I would not be able to use that time for other things, do new interviews, record new videos, I decided to add Casual Silence to the small collection of Dutch interviews, along with Gerben Klazinga and Ton Scherpenzeel. At least they are in good company!

* Helmond is a small town in the south of the Netherlands, where the band has their base.

p.s. in case you are wondering why this article is in English…to give an elaborate explenation why the interview is in Dutch.
